Lauren Scherr
This California native’s success story began when she traded in her air guitar for a black hand bag. Early dreams of being the front man in a rock band playing to thousands of screaming fans didn’t materialize so Lauren Scherr returned to her first love – fashion.
The ‘sequin’ was planted early when as a little girl her collection for all things that glittered – rhinestones, her mom’s old jewels and felt ribbon, glue, scissors, flowers and pipe cleaners were kept close at hand in her Big Art Box.
She was fascinated by glamour and loved watching her mom get ready for nights out on the town with her father. Fur wraps, fancy dresses, glittery earrings, and dramatic make up captured her full attention. Reality set in all too quickly when she was reminded of having to be her brother’s keeper while her parents were out having fun.
However, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Lauren to hone her selling skills as she successfully convinced him to play her favorite game “Retail Store” as she affectionately called it. Lauren’s store was resplendent with jewellery and purses while he peddled He Man and Star Wars figures. Her store was something special, even from the start. You had to get buzzed in, pictures of famous people adorned the walls and the merchandise was regally displayed on risers covered with velvet. Lauren was in the third grade when they began to play and while her brother moved on to work in the music industry, Lauren has never closed up shop.
Lauren always had a creative flare but didn’t realize that it was a talent she would ultimately take to the bank. She made clothes and turned tshirts into works of art with the flick of a paintbrush. From lampshades to picture frames, there was hardly a household item that didn’t receive Lauren’s artistic touch. She put rhinestones on shoes, placed feather boas on her hair brushes and even put a modern day twist on her grandmother’s old jewellery.
The tide turned and it was Laura getting primped and primed in preparation for a night out, not only on Saturday nights but Wednesday thru Friday as well! She had a little black dress, high heals, glittery make up, chandelier earings and a terribly boring black purse. But boring wouldn’t last long! It was back to her Big Art Box – the one filled with flowers, feathers and rhinestones. Armed with her glue gun she went to work on what would become her signature handbag – a black bag covered in pink and crème roses. Instantly she felt pretty, sexy and flirty! All the things women love to feel. All this from a bag? You bet!
She garnered much attention that evening for her ‘glamourized’ hand bag and the bonus was that it was for something she actually loved doing – creating. Being in the fashion spotlight that night inspired her to set up shop on the floor of her apartment gluing away on her newest canvas, PURSES.
Working into the wee hours of the morning with MTV’s Insomniac Theatre keeping her company, she incorporated all of her favorite fashion fixes – luxurious fabrics, feathers and all things that glitter, and fashioned what is now part of her signature line of handbags and accessories.
This Hollywood style setter has since attracted a big celebrity fan base including Heather Locklear, Sheryl Crow and fashionista Tyra Banks. Her bags have been seen on “Desperate Housewives”, and have graced the pages fashion magazines including InStyle, Elle and “O” magazine.
